What makes getting an architecture degree hard?
Q. I am just wondering because I am just starting my first semester as a sophomore and I am seriously thinking about going for an architecture degree. I have heard from numerous people that it is really hard to get an architecture degree but I really haven't had a good explanation as to why. If I could have someone who knows a lot about it architecture and the process through college I would be very thankful. Thanks in advance.

A. First of all, most reputable architecture schools are difficult to get into since they have limited openings each year. The courses are not difficult, it just a matter of the amount of work. While I was in school, I often would spend 72 hours without sleep working on a project in studio. Other people in my class would be on a similar schedule. The philosophy in design studio is that you start being behind and you will never catch up. Your professor and the visiting jurors will reinforce that during grading/judging. You practically end up living in the Studio with all your classmates. Architecture School is a marathon that pushes your body and mind to its limits.

How did architecture during the renaissance influence us today?
Q. My i- search topic is Renaissance architecture, and though we don't need an argument, we have to compose an essay about how our topic influenced the renaissance all the way through modern day. I have researched many types of architectures during that time period, and the are outstandingly beautiful, but i don't see how they influenced anything. Does anyone know if they discovered a different material for building that we still use today or something of that nature? Any information would be very much appreciated! thank you in advance!

A. Well, I don't now that they discovered any new building materials. But, the Renaissance influenced the architecture with which we use to build houses and such. The Renaissance Revival style is used in quite a few buildings from the residential to the political. It's not built that often today but a couple hundred ears ago many wealthy household used it when they built their residences. Those residences still stand, or at least most of them do. I don't know if this will help you any, but it's all I know.

Is architecture art? When dealing with examples of ideology and iconography is it correct to call architectur?
Q. When dealing with examples of ideology and iconography, is it categorically correct to place architecture in the same realm as art? Art, as a modifier of a cultural world view, helps to articulate the status quo in a given culture at a specific point in time. Do you find the argument that architecture expresses the beliefs, desires, or interests of the most elite (because they have the power to influence architecture) to be sufficient reason to examine architecture as art? I'm writing a paper and I want to know if my logic is b.s. or not.
Asked by Alex D - Thu Dec 11 07:06:43 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Architecture is probably the best form of art when dealing with ideology and iconography. The most successful art comments on the status quo. Most architecture does the same, except the international style, which is supposed to be timeless(one could argue that is a comment on the status quo) On a side note, It would also be interesting to note that most art museums are heavily stocked with religious artifacts, and most historic pieces of architecture are churches, temples, or mosques. That should say something about the need for beliefs to be expressed in art.

A. Look into the St. Louis Arch, for one. It's actual shape is a hyperbolic cosine, also called a "catenary curve". Or maybe the Sydney Opera House? If I remember correctly, it's mathematically interesting (though maybe not as much as the Arch). Or if you want a little reading, I just searched google and found this (looks like it's about several interesting buildings in Britain):

What is the difference between architecture and interior designing?
Q. I like to design buildings. i.e, paint, furniture, the shape of the building etc. So which one of the two involves the above mentioned? For which do we have to study a lot? Is architectural engineering more difficult than medicine? If i opt for architecture, will it be stressful later and will i have no free time? In architecture do we have to travel to different areas or just make the construction as a drawing?

A. It sounds as if you would like interior design better. It is more about actual design, harmony, color, shape...etc. Architechture involves a lot of math and techinical things. Structural aspects of building, the surrounding environment, people building for (and a lot more things). In my school, architechture is one of the hardest majors, right up there with medicine. It is INTENSE to say the least. You have to really love it to do it, and later on in life there is a high possibility that you wont become an arcitect. Probably depending on what you do, you will have to travel. If you really want to be an arcitect, is it essential to travel and look at the site. If you're planning on slacking in college, and do not want tons of… [cont.]

A. The question that you must first answer is why you are interested in architecture. You also need to be honest with yourself in order to set your goal should you decide to pursue this career. Do you want to have your own firm or are you content with working for a company for example. Keep in mind that goals are not dreams, I'm not saying you shouldn't aim for the stars, but understand that it takes a tremendous amount of sacrifice in this profession. As for what to expect in architecture school, I can summarize it in one word, "PAIN", that pertains to both physical and mental pain. One thing that architecture school have taught me is my body and mind is able to withstand a lot more punishment than I ever imagined. I personally believe… [cont.]

A. Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and structures. A wider definition often includes the design of the total built environment: from the macrolevel of town planning, urban design, and landscape architecture to the microlevel of construction details and furniture. The term "Architecture" is also used for the profession of providing architectural services. Architectural design involves the manipulation of mass, space, volume, texture, light, shadow, materials, program, and other elements in order to achieve an end which is aesthetic as well as functional. This distinguishes Architecture from the applied science of engineering which usually concentrates on the structural and feasibility aspects of design. According… [cont.]

What other jobs/careers in architecture could I do besides being an architect?
Q. I really love architecture but I don't think I have it in me to be an architect. When it comes down to it I don't think I have the patience and sensitivity to sit and design. BUT I do have high appriciation for design and I have a strong memory for design (as in the actual aptitude based on aptitude research). Anyways. I know I want to be in the industry in some way but I don't know what other jobs are avaliable in architecture that will pay pretty well. Obviously there is drafting but that doesn't pay that great as I understand. Could be wrong there. What jobs are out there and how do you enter the industry.

A. Most states now require NCARB certification now to become a licensed architect.. That means that you must have a degree from an accredited school and participate in the Inter Developement Program (IDP).. I would browse the NCARB website to look for your state requirements. If the requirements are not very stringent ie. you only need 4 years or experience counts towards education, then I would contact your state board directly and ask them how long the requirements will stay that way..

What is the difference of Architecture and Engineering ?
Q. Architecture is the only one who Draw and plan Buildings, while Engineering is the one who measures and plan the materials that should be used.

A. The first is an artistic discipline and the second is an applied science discipline, but other than that, they are both involved with building systems in some way or form, though they have different dimensioning systems. Engineers (well, there are many kinds of engineers) usually have to take more science, architects more art, but they will often work closely on building projects or even virtual building projects.

I am wondering if there is any site I can get information, or I am thinking rather a radical move, getting all the firms' numbers and addresses and personally going each one of them and show my portfolio. I think you're smart doing it as although you would be be unpaid it'll still be a great hands on learning experience and compliment your studies ! Another factor is that it will look good on your Resume and may even lead into a position. Good luck...great profession BTW !

What is the best type of laptop for an architecture major?
Q. I'm going into architecture this fall, and I have no idea what laptop I would need. I have yet to check the college's specs, but what's a general preference of architecture majors? PC or Mac? And what specifications? Thanks.
Asked by pu d - Tue Jun 9 12:42:22 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Go with your school's specifications. They may even ask you to purchase the computer (and the accompanying software) from a company of their choosing. Most architecture students use PCs (AutoCAD has not yet been released on a MAC). If you will be doing heavy 3d rendering, drafting, and processing, you will want decent processing power, a really good graphics card, and plenty of memory. Most students rely on a desktop for their rendering needs in studio, but also have a laptop to so they can work at home, play music, or work on other things while the desktop is processing a rendering. Good luck! Check with your school first!!
