What is the difference between a hardcover book vs. a reinforced hardcover book?
Q. Sometimes when I am looking for a book online an online store will have the same book with a format of hardcover and then usually for a little bit more they will have a reinforced hardcover book edition. What is the difference?
Asked by SquirrelPanic - Tue Jul 31 19:43:27 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The reinforced hardcover book generally refers to library binding, this binding is designed to withstand alot of use and is generally more expensive than regular hadrcover.

What are the pros and cons of buying a hardcover or soft cover book?
Q. I'm looking at textbooks for my psychology class, and they have the hardcover edition of the book I need for $100, while the softcover is there for $37. This is the first college level class I've ever taken, so I don't know what the difference is besides costs and the sturdyness of the book. Also, because I'm taking this class in the summer2 session, its the last time this book is being used, so I can't sell it afterwards to someone else, as its being replaced. What do I choose? Does it matter?
Asked by Chris - Sun Jun 28 11:13:21 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Get softcover, since you can't sell it and you probably won't have much use for it in the future, it would be a waste to spend over twice as much for the same book. The books will have the same info in them, which is what really matters.

How come new books always come out in hardcover?
Q. I know this is a useless question, but I really see no reason for books to always come out in hardcover first, I mean why can't they just be paperback right away? And what's the point of hardcovers anyways?
Asked by Fairasta - Sun Jul 12 21:21:21 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First off, it is a "pretty packaging" thing. Hardcover books look better. We may not realize it, but in our subconcious we judge everything by its appearance. You know the saying, "Dont judge a book by its cover." Well, we do! Deep down we get the sense that just because it is a nice, more expensive packaging, it must be a better book. People always assume that it is a matter of making more money. Actually, this isnt entirely true. Yes, hardcover books sell for more. But, they also cost more to make. So when it comes down to it, they are actually making the same off hardcover as they are off of paperback. So if they end up making the same amount, then why not put hard copies out there first, since they are the flashy attraction for the… [cont.]

Asked by Amanda - Mon Jul 13 16:02:21 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I have never heard of them selling just the jackets. I have a few books that have completely massacred jackets, and I wish I could replace them, but I'm pretty sure I have to buy the entire book. Maybe if you got a job at a bookstore, you could steal the jackets? Haha, kidding (though that may work?). I love Harry Potter. Never give up.

Where can I find hardcover Dean Koontz books in good condition?
Q. I've been searching all of the main sites for hardcover Dean Koontz books (preferable 1st edition & def. not book club editions) for a gift. His newer stuff is relatively easy to find, but all of his older stuff seems to only be available as book club editions or are in bad condition. Is there any place I can go that would make this easier?

A. If you don't mind used books, try Better World Books. They list them by cover type and give you condition grades to choose from. I have got books from them before and been satisfied with the condition of the books, which I thought was better than stated when I ordered them. Most of the books are reasonably priced, and they offer free shipping on orders in the US.

What's the best way to "break in" a new hardcover book?
Q. I just received a couple of books as a gift that I'd like to keep for a while. I seem to remember once receiving a lesson on the appropriate way to open a hardcover book for the first time. As I recall, we are supposed to open the book a few pages at a time. However, I can't remember whether we started in the center or at the outside. Could you give me some advice?
Asked by drshorty - Fri Jun 30 19:27:21 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The following is copied from the website below: Opening a new book: Careless opening of a new book , or a newly bound book, can crack its spine. Books bound in plastic are especially prone to having tight spines. To safely open a new book, place the book on its spine on a flat surface, and, holding the text block upright, open the front cover and run fingers gently along the hinge. Do the same to the back cover, followed by both front and back end sheet pages. Then, altering front and back, open small sections of pages, applying the same gentle pressure with fingers, until the entire book is open. Hold the textblock in the same upright position during the process.

Should I get the International Edition or Hardcover edition of a book?
Q. I'm shopping for my textbooks for college, and find that the international version is a lot lot cheaper than the hardcover edition. Is there any difference between international and hardcover books of the same title, authors, and copyright years? I want to get it cheap, but not at the expense of getting wrong content in the book such as two different questions for example Chapter 2, question 3 of each book are totally different. So usually, do international books and the hardcover editions have the exact same content?

A. What's the difference between a U.S. edition and international edition when you buy a college textbook? This is the first question that I asked myself when I started my graduate class a year ago. Textbooks are notoriously expensive in this country, and the high tuition fees are not helping either. I started looking into the international edition and found that basically there was no difference except the design of the cover. Seriously, that's the only difference! The U.S. edition usually has a hard cover with a different design on it, while the international edition has a soft cover. I'm not sure if that much of the paper justifies doubling the price of a textbook when the internatonal edition can do the same job. Students and… [cont.]

Where can you find the original hardcover books if the book is an older book?
Q. I am looking for some Mary Higgins Clark books that are the original hardcover. I don't want the kind that has the book jacket on it I rather have the one that doesn't. I can't seem to find these kind of books anywhere. I know that my school library has these books but I am sure they get it through a school program where I cannot order from. If you can please try to tell me where I can find them that would be great. I have tried amazon.com, ebay.com, b-n.com, borders.com. It seems like I have tried every bookstore website.

A. Amazon is a good one, but if that's not happening for you, here are some other ideas. You could do a "Want It Now" post on eBay. You can tell potential sellers what you want. This is a popular author, so I think someone out there should have something for you. Also, try www.addall.com and/or www.fetchbooks.info. I have used these sites in the past when I've tried to price a book I couldn't find on Amazon. They are tied in to many on-line bookstores and will show what is available. You might contact the actual publisher. They may have something for you. I'm assuming this author had many titles printed by the same company. When you are buying, make sure you read book descriptions if you pay on-line. The library binding might have marks… [cont.]

Q. Does everyone know what I'm talking about here? When you buy a hardcover book, there is sometimes this paper cover that protects it that looks exactly like the actual cover itself. I need these for the books in the Twilight Series; Breaking Dawn and Eclipse. Please, if anyone has these and doesn't particularly need or want them, tell me. I would appreciate it dearly and am willing to pay a reasonable amount for them. Or if anyone knows anywhere where i could get them, that would be great too.

A. It depends on the book and author. If it's a popular author who puts out a book a year, then usually they launch the paperback of the previous book when the new hardcover comes out, like Charlaine Harris' Sookie series. If it is an author who isn't so prolific, then they may wait about 18 months or so, when demand for the hardback has waned somewhat. (Think Twilight and Harry Potter.) There isn't a strict timetable. A lot of really good books come out in paperback from the start and don't have a hardback version. If the authors become popular, then their books may start coming out in paperback first. Then there are "trade paperbacks" which are paperback books but a bit larger than regular paperback. Some books come out in this… [cont.]

A. Library binding is a way to increase the life of books and periodicals used in libraries. This is done by sewing the pages in place and by reinforcing the spine for each volume Hardcover may have flexible sewn spines which allow the book to lie flat on a surface when opened, although most modern commercial hardcover books have glued spines. Library binding is also used to re-bind paperbacks or hardcover books making them more durable.
