If I buy an ebook and put it on my paid membership website for others to read and download, is this illegal?
Q. Whats the difference between that and selling used tangible books and CD's? I am not taking credit for the ebook, nor am I selling it, although it can be downloaded. Whats the difference?

A. Not by a law specifically addressing it. There is the question of whether doing so violates copyright law. There is a recognized legal principle called the "first sale doctrine" which prohibits or limits a vendor from being able to what a purchaser does with a product under copyright law, but the question of whether it applies to computer software has not been resolved. Companies have successfully sued people for posting copyrighted music to file-sharing services.

A. Hey man...ebooks can always make good money. You can sell your ebook various ways once it is completed. It is best to take advantage of as many ways as possible in order to make as many sales as you can. Here are three ways you may not have thought about: * If you have been steadily building a list of people who are interested in your topic, you can send them an email announcing the completion of your ebook. Hopefully you have stayed in touch with them by sending out emails regularly so that they remember who you are. You may want to offer them a discount for purchasing from you because they have remained on your list for awhile. * You can sell on Amazon and other online booksellers as long as you have an ISBN number. These… [cont.]

A. eBays fees are dependent on two things. Listing costs and commission. There are established charges for an eBay listing. The more complex the listing, the more the cost. If you have a simple listing, text, no pictures, no reserve, no starting bid, that would be the cheapest. But add pictures, put in a background, pay for premium listing, add a reserve, put the starting bid at something more then minimal amount, and that costs more. As you build your listing, eBay will keep a running total of what it will cost to list your item, and you have the option to review that cost, and change your listing appropriately before you incur any charges. The listing fees you have to pay even if your item does not sell. Now, the commission. eBay… [cont.]

What should I think about before I publish a PDF eBook?
Q. I'm currently writing a book about search engine optimization for blog posts, and I'm thinking of publishing it as a Portable Document Format (PDF) eBook. But what legal rights and so one must I be aware of? And can I publish the eBook as a download (secure payments trough PayPal) myself without further ado? I'm a Norwegian resident so US taxes and so on is irrelevant. I'm also interested in other tips for eBook publishing. PS: I'm already aware of PDF encryption and metadata.

How do I secure ebook download website?
Q. I want to create a store selling ebook through oscommerce. Do I need to add anything to secure it and prevent people from stealing the ebooks. How do I secure the download?
Asked by NiqGirl - Tue Sep 9 21:01:21 2008 - - 1 Answers - 2 Comments

A. There are several ways to protect your assets. Additionally, there are a dozen ways to implement this kind protection. Since securing a web commerce site is such a multi-faceted issue, I would seriously consider hiring a professional web programmer to do it for you. Your security needs are unique, so it's not easy or practical to spit a few tips for you here. Find someone who knows what they're doing, sit down with them, discuss the site, and let them develop a security model that works for you and your site. BTW, osCommerce is an aging, rickety platform for creating business sites. It's large, clunky, hard to configure, and an overall pain. If your budget permits, look into someone developing a custom e-commerce engine for your site.… [cont.]

How to download an ebook that I ordered once without paying for it again?
Q. I ordered an ebook online and I added the download page to my favorites to download it at a later time. When i clicked the website from my favorites list it asked for my credit card again.
Asked by Garrett - Sat Dec 13 01:19:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You'll have to give more info than that for someone to help you--different ebook stores have different systems. Some of them use your credit card number to "lock" the ebook, so you have to enter the number to open the book. This prevents you from sharing it with anyone else, unless you're willing to share your credit card number as well. So they may just be asking your CC# for security, not so they can charge you again. You should send an email to customer support at the place where you bought the ebook; they'll be able to explain how their system works.

A. Right now the two most popular ebook readers are the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader. The Kindle will not be available if you're outside the U.S. so I'll suggest you to go for the Sony Reader. It is not expensive and there is a good review here: You may get the device from Amazon too. They provide international shipping at a reasonable price.

A. If its your original material, then it's copyrighted. It belongs to you. Best way to show proof is to print 2 copies with the date on all of the pages. Keep one in your records and then mail the other through the post office. Make sure to keep the envelope sealed and the post mark now is proof you own you it. There is no way to stop someone but you can always do a monthly check online to find out if someone copied it. Simply take 2 sentences from your book and search it in all the major search engines. If someone copied it to their site, it will come up and then you can contact them to remove it immediately and if not, you can go after them legally if they do not remove it. Make sure to add a page to your e-book in the front that… [cont.]

Q. I have a book only available in book form or as a standard manuscript that I would like to republish. I need to convert the text into some kind of computer saved document so I can publish an ebook or make the manuscript re printable. I'm looking for the most efficient way to do that. I do have a scanner.
Asked by Stan S - Thu Feb 28 16:23:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You might try searching the web for unique phrases from the book, to see if it has already been converted by Google books or something. 2. The publisher *might* have the book available as an electronic file, which they *might* give you, and it might be more likely if you promise to advertise the print copy. 3. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software takes images and converts them to text files.

Any issues with reselling recipes off the internet in a ebook?
Q. I want to change the portion sizes & tweak the ingredients to resell in a ebook. Anyone know if there are legal issues with this?
Asked by Adam - Fri Aug 21 12:07:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, copyright issues. Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean that you can take a recipe and resell it. Many original recipes are posted for personal use only, and are not meant to be taken, tweaked, and sold. Many other recipes are actually copyrighted, and are not really supposed to be published online at all. Make up your own recipes, and you'll be all right.

A. Hi Dear, Everything is normal with you...nothing wrong in planning and not materializing it. A simple reason could be that you start writing and make modifications every now and then. You might want to to the best and which is why its taking you unlimited time to complete any project. Start with a small size ebook...upload it selflessly...and you will soon get encouraged to write and complete more than expected. No one is perfect...they are just better or worse than others comparatively. Good luck to your new ebook.

A. You don't need to "attach" anything. Just upload the e-book to your webserver, and give the buyers the link. Or you could upload it to a site like if you want.
