If I buy an ebook and put it on my paid membership website for others to read and download, is this illegal?
Q. Whats the difference between that and selling used tangible books and CD's? I am not taking credit for the ebook, nor am I selling it, although it can be downloaded. Whats the difference?

There is a recognized legal principle called the "first sale doctrine" which prohibits or limits a vendor from being able to what a purchaser does with a product under copyright law, but the question of whether it applies to computer software has not been resolved.
