Q. I made a PDF from a Microsoft Word document. So far so good. Now what is the best way to protect my PDF eBook to ensure I don't get thousands of unauthorized copies of my PDF eBook floating around the internet? I don't want to use a simple password to protect the PDF document, because judging by the amount of unauthorized PDF copies of other eBooks I have seen available on the internet, that security method is very weak.

Go to Paypay and do some setup (do a search on Paypal for instructions) As part of the setup you will specify a page on your website where Paypal will transfer the user after they successfully pay for the item. On your "download" page you provide a link to the product in PDF format for the user to open or download. Make sure this page has a not easy to guess name...ie not "download-page". I'm writing a "how to" ebook? How long should it a typical ebook be?
Q. I know it depends on the subject and a common answer would be "as long as it needs to be." I'm planning on selling the ebook for between $7 and $10. It is of course well written and well thought out. I'm nearing completion though and it will probably turn out a bit less than 4000 words. How does this compare with other ebooks of this nature and price? If this seems low, then it's possible I could explore adding another chapter or two. Also, I'm writing this in Word and plan to make it a PDF--do I need to change the settings for how much I put on one page or is how it is in Word just fine? Also any suggestions on doing a money back guarantee vs. not?

A. Don't think of it as an ebook but simply as selling information. Some electronic documents are 1 page long, others are 500 pages. The book should be as long as you need to cover your topic succinctly. Ten pages would be a good round number. Also the main thing about ebooks is exposure. How will people find it. You can submit a small section of it to a site like articlepanda.com with a link back to the whole ebook where they can purchase it, or you can try and sell it on Amazon.com if you get a good publisher rating.

A. Yes, copyright issues. Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean that you can take a recipe and resell it. Many original recipes are posted for personal use only, and are not meant to be taken, tweaked, and sold. Many other recipes are actually copyrighted, and are not really supposed to be published online at all. Make up your own recipes, and you'll be all right.

A. You can always just keep it the way it is and once paid, email it to the purchaser as an attachment. Or use a pdf type program. If it is in PDF format, it will be more difficult for someone to change a few words here and there and re-market it as not everyone is into editing pdf files. You need a paypal or other type account to receive payment and then of course you need to market it. There are so many ebooks out there for free and for sale, unless you have something fresh and compelling, it may be difficult to sell, but hey, it's always worth a try. ~best to you ~jennifer

A. I'll still say the Kindle, because Amazon provides much better content support compared to other ebook readers. Actually the Kindle 2 can still read PDF files through conversion, so it should not be a big problem... A. Yes. You do need to get a copyright in order to protect both yourself and your profits from unscrupolis people. I think you can apply for it through the patent office but if you cant afford that then you can use the poor man's copyright which is to save a copy of your work on cd then mail that copy to yourself using certied mail. Then if you have to go to court, you can take the envelope with the cd in it and use that to prove both ownership and authorship. The envelope has to remain unopened except in front of the judge for veracity.

A. Having owned a shuffle, I can tell you that no, there isn't a way to break it up. Unless you have a mac, or access to one. If you can, import the song to garage band, and separate it into tracks that way. In fact, any music editing software would do the trick.
