What is the best way to protect my PDF eBook?
Q. I made a PDF from a Microsoft Word document. So far so good. Now what is the best way to protect my PDF eBook to ensure I don't get thousands of unauthorized copies of my PDF eBook floating around the internet? I don't want to use a simple password to protect the PDF document, because judging by the amount of unauthorized PDF copies of other eBooks I have seen available on the internet, that security method is very weak.

What exactly is an ebook? What makes an ebook different from a normal document?
Q. What does an ebook consist of ? Is it only html ? Is it in the form of pdf?
Asked by T.P. - Tue May 13 22:37:21 2008 - - 4 Answers - 3 Comments
A. An ebook can be in any format --- usually it is a doc or a pdf, but can be saved differently. It is simply a term used to describe an electronic copy of a book. It is another way of defining it--to be included among paperbacks, hardcovers, audio books, and now--ebooks!

What should I think about before I publish a PDF eBook?
Q. I'm currently writing a book about search engine optimization for blog posts, and I'm thinking of publishing it as a Portable Document Format (PDF) eBook. But what legal rights and so one must I be aware of? And can I publish the eBook as a download (secure payments trough PayPal) myself without further ado? I'm a Norwegian resident so US taxes and so on is irrelevant. I'm also interested in other tips for eBook publishing. PS: I'm already aware of PDF encryption and metadata.

A. You need a lawyer, because it is you protection you care about. When someone dowloads and pays, they read and agree to the terms, duplication, and so on. Get a lawyer and a standard "disclaimer"

A. Hiya Here's some good ones for you that helped me do exactly this. They've all come from Clickbank which is the biggest (and safest) place on the internet to buy ebooks. You've not said what sort of party planning it is you want to do, ie childrens, night clubs etc, so I've given you a few to pick from. They are all in the sources links at the bottom of this. They are all really cheap and the last one came with some free bonuses as well which were really useful. I hope this helps. Have fun!

A. There are several ways to protect your assets. Additionally, there are a dozen ways to implement this kind protection. Since securing a web commerce site is such a multi-faceted issue, I would seriously consider hiring a professional web programmer to do it for you. Your security needs are unique, so it's not easy or practical to spit a few tips for you here. Find someone who knows what they're doing, sit down with them, discuss the site, and let them develop a security model that works for you and your site. BTW, osCommerce is an aging, rickety platform for creating business sites. It's large, clunky, hard to configure, and an overall pain. If your budget permits, look into someone developing a custom e-commerce engine for your site.… [cont.]

Asked by Jamani - Fri Oct 9 13:24:00 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Add a Paypal buy it now button on your website. Go to Paypay and do some setup (do a search on Paypal for instructions) As part of the setup you will specify a page on your website where Paypal will transfer the user after they successfully pay for the item. On your "download" page you provide a link to the product in PDF format for the user to open or download. Make sure this page has a not easy to guess name...ie not "download-page". Also modify the page options on this page to no-follow to prevent the search engine from indexing this page. This is not a 100% secure way to protect your product. If you expect a high volume you could purchase download packages or list your product on the clickbank network and allow other people to… [cont.]

A. Right now the two most popular ebook readers are the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader. The Kindle will not be available if you're outside the U.S. so I'll suggest you to go for the Sony Reader. It is not expensive and there is a good review here: You may get the device from Amazon too. They provide international shipping at a reasonable price.

How do you write and publish your own ebook?
Q. I have so many ideas I think would be perfect for a book but I feel intimidated by trying to get an agent and publisher. Someone told me about ebooks and it sounds good but where do I start? How do I learn about writing and publishing my own ebook?

A. These are two questions in one, but I'll try to answer. Question #1: How do you write your own eBook? Writing is very different from what you learned in school. You write in a casual, friendly manner - like I'm doing here. It's an exchange of ideas. Don't be stiff in your text. Use contractions, etc. It helps to create an outline first and then let the information flow from one aspect to the next. Question #2: How do you publish your own eBook? Publishing is so easy! Adobe offers five free conversions from Word to PDF format PER email address. Then you zip it up, put it on your server (hopefully you've invested in a baby or hatchling plan at Hostgator for under $10 a month and a dot info domain only costs 99 cents at Godaddy). You… [cont.]

I'm writing a "how to" ebook? How long should it a typical ebook be?
Q. I know it depends on the subject and a common answer would be "as long as it needs to be." I'm planning on selling the ebook for between $7 and $10. It is of course well written and well thought out. I'm nearing completion though and it will probably turn out a bit less than 4000 words. How does this compare with other ebooks of this nature and price? If this seems low, then it's possible I could explore adding another chapter or two. Also, I'm writing this in Word and plan to make it a PDF--do I need to change the settings for how much I put on one page or is how it is in Word just fine? Also any suggestions on doing a money back guarantee vs. not?
Asked by L. J. - Wed Aug 1 18:40:56 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Don't think of it as an ebook but simply as selling information. Some electronic documents are 1 page long, others are 500 pages. The book should be as long as you need to cover your topic succinctly. Ten pages would be a good round number. Also the main thing about ebooks is exposure. How will people find it. You can submit a small section of it to a site like articlepanda.com with a link back to the whole ebook where they can purchase it, or you can try and sell it on Amazon.com if you get a good publisher rating.

Any issues with reselling recipes off the internet in a ebook?
Q. I want to change the portion sizes & tweak the ingredients to resell in a ebook. Anyone know if there are legal issues with this?
Asked by Adam - Fri Aug 21 12:07:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, copyright issues. Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean that you can take a recipe and resell it. Many original recipes are posted for personal use only, and are not meant to be taken, tweaked, and sold. Many other recipes are actually copyrighted, and are not really supposed to be published online at all. Make up your own recipes, and you'll be all right.

Asked by Aware - Tue Jan 8 12:57:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can always just keep it the way it is and once paid, email it to the purchaser as an attachment. Or use a pdf type program. If it is in PDF format, it will be more difficult for someone to change a few words here and there and re-market it as not everyone is into editing pdf files. You need a paypal or other type account to receive payment and then of course you need to market it. There are so many ebooks out there for free and for sale, unless you have something fresh and compelling, it may be difficult to sell, but hey, it's always worth a try. ~best to you ~jennifer

What eBook reader can I get in Australia?
Q. What eBook reader can I get here in Australia? If none are actually manufactured for us poor Aussies, and I have to import one in; what is the best reader? Sony Reader? Cybook Opus? Which ones? I'm not interested in the newly announced Aussie Kindle because I want my reader to be able to read more formatted titles, not just Amazon titles.

A. I'll still say the Kindle, because Amazon provides much better content support compared to other ebook readers. Actually the Kindle 2 can still read PDF files through conversion, so it should not be a big problem... There is a thorough review here, which also mentions about Sony Reader and iRex: Hope this helps you decide.

How do I get copy rights for an eBook that I'm creating? Do I actually need copy rights to sell it?
Q. Hello, I'm writing an eBook and nearly done... Mi intention is to sell it online but I don't know if I actually need to have copy rights to protect it or if I could just say that nobody is allowed to resell it... What should I do?
Asked by Harvey R - Fri Jun 1 02:55:28 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Yes. You do need to get a copyright in order to protect both yourself and your profits from unscrupolis people. I think you can apply for it through the patent office but if you cant afford that then you can use the poor man's copyright which is to save a copy of your work on cd then mail that copy to yourself using certied mail. Then if you have to go to court, you can take the envelope with the cd in it and use that to prove both ownership and authorship. The envelope has to remain unopened except in front of the judge for veracity.

I have an Ipod shuffle and put a 4 hour ebook on it. How can I break it into tracks to avoid ong fastforward?
Q. I have to hold down the next button for 10 or more minutes. Can the ebook be broken into tracks and/or if there a faster way to fast foward.

A. Having owned a shuffle, I can tell you that no, there isn't a way to break it up. Unless you have a mac, or access to one. If you can, import the song to garage band, and separate it into tracks that way. In fact, any music editing software would do the trick.
